Banning unhealthy snacks is proven to be the best method

Placing a ban on snacks such as sweets and crisps is the most effective way of encouraging healthy eating among school children, a Cardiff University study has found.

Conducted over a year, the research also discovered that peer pressure has an affect on youngsters and their attitudes to healthy eating.

Fruit tuck shops replaced the traditional tuck in 23 schools throughout south Wales and south west England with the study assessing children aged nine to 11 at a further 20 schools.

The university has highlighted how the research backs policies to increase healthy eating among kids.

Funded by the Food Standards Agency, 70,000 pieces of fruit were sold during the year-long study.

Schoolchildren were surveyed on how much fruit and snacks they'd eaten the day before and how much their friends regularly consumed.
