Kent school pupils get creative with an angry carrot

Three GCSE students at Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre in Tenterden, Kent, have been praised by a professional print agency for thinking outside the box when asked to rebrand the school's dining hall.

Following a naming competition and student voting, Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre's dining hall was given the obscure name of "The Angry Carrot".

The school's Graphic Design department was then commissioned to design a character which would feature on signs, daily menus and on the plasma screens.

The winning students, Charlotte Hickman, Olivia Masters and Matthew Hills, will all receive cinema vouchers and a week's free lunches, courtesy of Chartwells. The catering company is also providing the new signage for the hall.

Chartwells has been providing school meals to the 2,000 students at Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre for over 14 years.

Selina Hall, catering manager for Chartwells said: "All of the students who helped to create the name and carrot character should be very proud; it is going to look fantastic when our kitchen staff wear their new orange uniforms and head chef wears black in keeping with the design."

William Cotterell, principal of Homewood School said: "We wanted to rebrand the dining hall so that students felt more inclined to spend time eating, socialising and relaxing there at lunch. It is the students' domain so we gave them the control over its new look and feel and I think they are going to be very excited to see the new signage. I hope they'll feel at home and proud of their achievements."
