Cabinet reshuffle sees Morgan replace Gove as education secretary

15 Jul 2014

Education Secretary Michael Gove, who has overseen the introduction of the School Food Plan, has been moved to the position of Chief Whip and replaced by Nicky Morgan, the former Treasury Minister.

The moves are part of a wide-ranging Cabinet re-shuffle being undertaken by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan has been promoted to one of the most senior roles in the Government, taking over just as the fruits of the School Food Plan start to come online – Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM), revised School Food Standards and the introduction of cooking on the curriculum for children up to the age of 14.

Morgan had been Financial Secretary to the Treasury and minister for women since April. Now, as well as taking over responsibility for the Department of Education, she has had the equalities portfolio added to her brief.

She was first elected to the House of Commons only in 2010.
