LACA statement on school food standards

15 Mar 2024
Following some reported problems around the school meals served in a Southampton school, LACA was contacted by the BBC and media to comment and have issued the following statement.

LACA and its members are committed to adhering to the school food standards ensuring that every meal served not only meets but exceeds the standards, this is a responsibility we take with utmost seriousness.

There is a significant challenge of preparing nutritious and appealing school meals with the constraints of such a limited budget. It demands a huge commitment to our children and young people's health and nutrition.

It is true to say that the school food industry has been hit hard over recent years by major food inflation, increases in the UK foundation living wage while at the same time seeing our funding levels from Government continue to fall well below all measures of inflation impacting schools and caterer's ability to meet the very high standard for our children across the country.

Despite this, we know from the LACA national surveys that our members continue to work diligently to balance all of theses elements striving to provide meals that are both enjoyable and wholesome.

We should never forget how hard our frontline staff work to meet the needs of pupils in their schools every day.

LACA expects all its members especially those directly involved in meal planning and preparation to uphold the school food standards.
