LACA national summit addresses key concerns

Around 100 delegates met at the Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth on Friday, February 17th for the first LACA National Seminar of 2012.

Welcomed by national chair Lynda Mitchell, the assembled delegates were keen to hear from speakers on some of the most pressing issues the association is facing this year, with thoughts and feedback following the event to lead into the National Training and Exhibition event in July.

Equal pay justice – UNISON and Bury Council come to historic agreement

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, and Bury Council have reached an agreement to settle nearly one thousand low paid women council workers’ equal pay claims.

The women, who do vital jobs such as caring, cleaning, and cooking, were paid less than their male colleagues, for doing work of equivalent value.

Bury was the first council that UNISON targeted with mass litigation for equal pay in 2007 – after it was the last council in Greater Manchester to take the issue seriously.

Schools invited to cook for the Queen

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, British Food Fortnight is inviting all schools in the UK to create a special menu to be served to The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall in June.

The top four winning schools will be invited to Buckingham Palace in June to see their menus prepared by the famous Royal Chef.

New nutritional guidelines offer support to help tackle obesity

Nurseries, childminders and other providers of early years services now have extra support on providing healthy meals for young children and to help reduce obesity in under-fives, thanks to new national, voluntary guidelines launched today.

For the first time, childcare providers have a nationally-recognised source of information about the foods they should offer young children, portion sizes, sample menus and recipes, advice on tackling fussy eating and involving children in food and cooking activities.

Obesity levels in primary school children are rising, finds report

Obesity rates among final year primary school children are on the rise, according to recent NHS Information Centre figures.

In 2010/11; 19.0% of Year 6 children measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) were obese, compared to 18.7% in 2009/10 and 17.5% in 2006/7.

In the same year group, another 14.4% of children were overweight in 2010/11, compared to 14.6% in 2009/10 and 14.2% in 2006/07.

However the proportion of Reception Year children who were obese in 2010/11 fell to 9.4%; compared to 9.8% in 2009/10 and 9.9% in 2006/07.

Children’s food campaigner and dinner lady Jeanette Orrey awarded MBE

Children’s food campaigner and dinner lady Jeanette Orrey has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to food in schools.

The School Food Trust's chief executive, Judy Hargadon, commented on the achievement: “I have always admired Jeanette’s very practical and caring approach to the children we serve and the cooks we help. Her no nonsense approach gets straight to the heart of the matter, whatever the challenge. This award is very well deserved.”

New powers allow price promotions on school meals

The government has announced that under new powers, schools will be able to offer price promotions on meals to particular pupils to encourage more children to try a healthy school lunch.

The new rules will mean schools can target pupils not eating school lunches or where uptake traditionally drops off, such at the start of secondary school.

Half a million extra kids are to qualify for Pupil Premium, according to reports

The Department for Education has announced that half a million extra pupils are now to qualify for the Pupil Premium, one of the additional benefits provided to children registered for free school meals.

The support is to be extended to all children who have been registered for free school meals in the last six years.
