Yorkshire and Humberside Region has released the minutes of its annual general meeting (AGM) held on March 13th, plus an update presented on the activities of the national board and the minutes of the recent monthly meeting held on April 25 at Red Kite in Wakefield.

It was agreed that because of the short amount of time available for planning, the region's Summer Event would be cancelled and replaced with a Committee Planning Day on June 20th at the RSPB, Old Moor Dearne Valley in Rotherham to plan the events for the end of 2013 and into 2014.

Local government ‘anti-poverty champions’ appointed for Wales

The Welsh Government has created 22 ‘anti-poverty champions’, to help the poorest in society and to protect those most at risk.

There will be two champions per local authority; one councillor and one senior council official. The champions scheme is being launched with communities and tackling poverty minister Huw Lewis.

Lewis said: “The Welsh Government is committed to doing all it can to tackle poverty head on. Addressing this issue should not be considered an add-on to what we do; it should be a theme that runs through all that we do.

Glasgow school kids raise over £23k for Mary’s Meals charity

School children across Glasgow have raised a total of £23,295 since 2009 for charity Mary’s Meals during fundraising initiatives organised by the city wide front line services provider Cordia.

Their successful efforts have allowed Cordia to sponsor a kitchen in Milonga Primary School, Malawi in 2011 allowing Mary’s Meals to feed 1654 pupils per day in 2012.

E & R Moffat wins Wales LACA Supplier of Year Award

British manufacturer E & R Moffat has won the Welsh Region LACA Supplier of the Year Award 2013.

Moffat has developed a portfolio of catering equipment specifically for schools, including regeneration ovens, both static and mobile, and the Versicarte range of food servery units. However, the award looks at the ‘total package’ and Moffat’s pre- and after-sales support for school meals organisations made a big impression on the judges.

They commented: “It was clear that this submission demonstrates dedicated commitment to school catering.

Derbyshire reassures parents its school meals are free of horsemeat

Parents can be reassured school meals are free from horsemeat thanks to stringent checks required by Derbyshire County Council, according to the council's cabinet member for education Mike Longden.

He said school meals provided by the authority’s school meals service used meat produced on two local organic farms.

Products were subject to a full tracing exercise, which detailed exactly where the beef was from, full details of the animals from which they were made and the organic accreditations of the farms.

All Saints Secondary pupils take part in Fuel Zone reward scheme

Pupils from All Saints Secondary celebrated the launch of the new Fuel Zone reward scheme this week that promotes the importance of eating healthily.

Glasgow City Council’s school catering providers, Cordia (Services) LLP, has reviewed its points scheme to encourage pupils to eat more fruit and vegetables.

London, South East regions join forces to celebrate

More than 100 LACA members from the London and South East regions joined forces to enjoy a Christmas party at the Holiday Inn Regents Park – and in the process raised money for charity.

Organisers moved to a larger venue for the event to accommodate the numbers involved and to allow for the celebrations to go on longer.

The formal, black tie celebration has been hailed by those taking part as the “best yet”, with many taking advantage of the opportunity to stay overnight in London for just over £50 a person and explore the capital the following day.

Bow School wins £200 worth of sports equipment from Pritchitts Viva Daily contest

The Bow Secondary School in East London has won £200 worth of sports equipment vouchers after winning the Pritchitts’ Viva Daily Win competition.

The prize – awarded to Bow School for registering the most entries to Viva Daily Win during National School Meals Week – was presented by Mike Morris, Pritchitts sector development manager, to a select group of Sports Captains from the school.

The competition offers pupils the chance to win an iPod shuffle every school day simply by entering the code found on their Viva Milk carton.

Eden Foodservice’s Gwyndaf Pritchard wins Education Award

Gwyndaf Pritchard, operations manager for Eden Foodservice in Anglesey has been awarded the Food Service Management Education Award for 2012 at the recent second national FSM Awards in London on 26 November.

The Isle of Anglesey contract, which is managed by Gwyndaf, provides a bespoke service to 55 schools.

The award citation said he had led the team in successfully developing and delivering a high profile catering service, which continued to evolve to meet changing legislative requirements and customer expectations.
