04 Apr 2014

Sharon Hodgson MP, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on School Food, will lead a seminar ‘Implementing the School Food Plan - Education, Standards and Free School Meals’ that is planned in London on June 2nd.

Among those committed to the speaker programme are Myles Bremner, director of the School Food Plan, Linda Cregan, chief executive of the School Food Trust, and a representative of LACA (Lead Association for Catering in Education).

Universal free school meals for all pupils aged seven and under starts in September.

Steve Moat, senior producer with seminar organiser Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum, said: “The seminar will provide a timely opportunity to assess progress and next steps for improving school food and children’s nutrition, one year on from the release of the School Food Plan.

“Planned sessions focus on the introduction of universal infant school meals from September 2014, with particular attention to issues of funding, quality and capabilities of school kitchens and the scheme’s possible expansion.

“With Government currently consulting on revised school food standards - and due to introduce cooking lessons to the national curriculum for 7-14 year olds from September 2014 - delegates will discuss challenges for implementation, including ensuring the understanding of new regulations and the readiness of schools and caterers.”
