Boris Johnson announces London schools vegetable gardens plan

13 Aug 2013

Every school in London is to have a vegetable garden, Mayor Boris Johnson is to announce this week, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

The news comes as a poll reveals that one in three children in the capital is too hungry to concentrate in class.

The push to give every school a garden is one of several steps being taken by Johnson and his food adviser, journalist Rosie Boycott, to encourage poorer families to eat more healthily.

Some families, unable to cook or grow their own food, rely too heavily on junk foods, says Boycott.

“The aim of every school having a garden”, she says, “is to teach children how to grow food and cook it at school, because many of their parents do not know how to make nutritious meals from cheap ingredients.

"We are also bringing in cookery classes for parents and children at schools for the same purpose.”
