Glasgow school kids raise over £23k for Mary’s Meals charity

20 Feb 2013

School children across Glasgow have raised a total of £23,295 since 2009 for charity Mary’s Meals during fundraising initiatives organised by the city wide front line services provider Cordia.

Their successful efforts have allowed Cordia to sponsor a kitchen in Milonga Primary School, Malawi in 2011 allowing Mary’s Meals to feed 1654 pupils per day in 2012.

Since 2009 Cordia have carried out two major fundraising campaigns for Mary’s Meals in school dining halls across the city. In 2011, they coordinated the ‘Step up to the Plate’ project, launching ‘Pitch in for the Kitchen’ the following year. During both of these fundraising drives, Cordia donated the cash equivalent of five meals for children abroad for every portion purchased in primary and secondary schools across Glasgow during designated days.

Cordia’s head of facilities management, Julia McCreadie said: “It really is fantastic to look back on the last four years and take note of the generosity of our city’s school children and the Cordia team. Together they have helped us donate so much to Mary’s Meals, an extremely worthwhile cause.

“It’s genuinely heat-warming to know that our efforts have helped the charity to feed so many children in Malawi, while also contributing to their education and long term prospects.  In Glasgow we have recently altered our primary school menu to include even more nutritional options for primary pupils so we are well aware how a child’s achievements in the classroom are hugely impacted by diet.”

Tracy Coughlan, education Co-ordinator for Mary’s Meals, added: “We are extremely grateful for the support Cordia has provided to Mary’s Meals which has helped us provide a good meal and hope to impoverished children in Malawi.

“Support through our Sponsor a School project is one of the reasons we have been able to expand our school feeding in Malawi and Liberia and is a fantastic way in which people, groups and organisations can help us reach more children with Mary’s Meals.”

Cordia make and serve over 50,000 school meals in the city’s 134 primary schools and 30 secondary schools every day.
