Karro Foods - horsemeat statement

21 Feb 2013

Over the past few weeks  there has been widespread media coverage regarding the discovery of horse meat DNA found in burgers and processed beef products, both in the UK and Ireland, and across several European countries.

At Karro Hull & Stoke we source meat raw materials from sites that are fully audited and approved by recognised approval bodies. These are routinely audited to ensure compliance with standards.

Horses are slaughtered at dedicated facilities which are not part of the Karro supply chain.

All raw materials have internal specifications to ensure required quality is maintained.

Full finished goods specifications are maintained and available to all of our customers.

Both sites are fully accredited to the BRC Grade A standard.

Karro Hull & Stoke do not convert any form of Horse meat. Species used within the sites are:

Hull: Beef, Pork, Lamb & Chicken

Stoke: Beef, Lamb & Chicken

There is full species segregation at both sites to ensure there is no cross contamination.

The site at Stoke is a dedicated Pork free site.

Test Protocol

We have introduced a sampling regime across all of our beef raw materials:

- Test all current beef based raw materials on site for presence of equine using DNA test to 1% as per FSA guidelines
- Test all beef based raw materials delivered to site for presence of equine using DNA test to 1% as per FSA guidelines
- Test a random 10 finished products per week using Elisa speciation protocol for Lamb, Pork, Beef, & Chicken protein presence.
