LACA names 3 winners of Harvest Festival Wheatsheaf Loaf competition

26 Nov 2025
LACA has named the three winners of its inaugural Harvest Festival Wheatsheaf Loaf competition, which was created in partnership with McDougalls.

The competition called on school pupils to get creative in the kitchen, celebrate the Harvest Festival and compete for prizes that will benefit their school. Pupils were challenged to create an amazing Wheatsheaf Loaf.

The three winners are: Horsford CofE VA Primary School, Amy Tantum from The Mount Camphill Community College and Oliver Baschan from Bicester School.

A panel of judges from LACA and Premier Foods (manufacturer of McDougalls) selected the winners. Three prizes of £500 have been awarded to spend on equipment for the school kitchen or food technology class.

A spokesperson for Horsford CofE VA Primary School said: “The children wanted to be creatively different with their wheatsheaf design. Instead of the traditional shape, they created a mill — fitting, as mills make flour for bread and our school is on Mill Lane.

“To make it vibrant, they divided the dough into four sections and added turmeric, cinnamon, paprika, and thyme for rich colour. With help from our local reverend, they included a small field mouse to symbolise nature and the Harvest Festival. The finished bread was displayed during the school’s Harvest Festival and is now proudly shown in the local church.”

The Mount Camphill Community College is an Anthroposophical College for young adults with learning difficulties, which means that celebrating Michaelmas is a very import part for the college.

A Mount Camphill Community College spokesperson explained: “Michaelmas is celebrated as an enrichment day and all students are ‘off timetable’ and take part in the celebration. Our college one students traditionally bake a harvest wheat sheaf, which is used to decorate our harvest table. Amy has created this amazing harvest wheat sheaf with very limited support.”

Oliver Baschan from Bicester School added: “The reason my loaf relates to the harvest is because the shape is of wheat. Wheat signifies the harvest as Autumn is the season for farmers to gather the grain. I also used ingredients such as milk and flour, sourced from farms. Additionally, sprinkled seeds on top to add to the looks and support the farms they were harvested in.”
