Liberal Democrats pledge to expand free school meals

26 Sep 2023
During their Autumn Conference, the Liberal Democrats pledged to extend free school meals to children in primary and secondary schools whose families receive Universal Credit.

The political party has stated they will ‘invest in our children’s future’ by introducing several new policies. These include expanding free school meals, increasing funding for schools, providing dedicated mental health support, enriching extra-curricular activities and reforming Ofsted inspections.

Data shows that over 900,000 children living in poverty are currently missing out on support from the Government.

Munira Wilson, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, said: “Every child, no matter their background, deserves the opportunity to achieve greatness. It's a principle we hold dear in the Liberal Democrats.

“We believe that every child should have the best possible start in life. They deserve good local schools and colleges that help them to achieve their full potential and grow up into happy, healthy and confident adults.

“It's time for a new era in education: one where every child's potential is nurtured and celebrated. The Liberal Democrats are committed to creating a fair and equitable education system that truly invests in our children's future.”
