Nearly 300,000 children to benefit from Mayor of London’s FSM scheme

25 Aug 2023
Up to 287,000 primary pupils in London will receive free school meals thanks to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, it was reported by BBC News.

Khan, who received free school meals as a child, has stepped forward with an emergency £135m to help primary schoolchildren in London receive free school meals from September 2023. The scheme is expected to save families an average of £440 per child across the year.

The London Boroughs with the most children eligible for the scheme are Barnet, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Hillingdon, Newham and Redbridge. Islington, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Westminster already provide free school meals for all primary schoolchildren.

Khan told BBC News: "I know from personal experience what a lifeline free school meals can be, which is why I'm determined to do all I can to help families across London who are struggling during this escalating cost-of-living crisis."
