Stoke catering team using ‘Cooking Bus’ to inspire schools

13 Feb 2014

Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s in-house caterer City Catering has this week organised a special event for schools called  ‘Get on board, be inspired’. It is taking place at Heron Cross Primary School on board a ‘Focus on Food Cooking Bus’ and runs from February 10-14.

A spokesman for City Catering said that more than 100 Potteries primary schoolchildren are enjoying fun lessons aboard as Stoke gears up for the introduction of cooking to the curriculum in September.

Children from 40 schools are using the mobile classroom provided by healthy eating charity Focus on Food to learn how to cook a dish from the current City Catering menu.

Sixteen school cooks are also being trained at the same time so they can assist teachers with their skills and experience when the lessons for 7 to 14-year-olds start.

The spokesman added: “Catering staff are looking forward to the new lessons It’s our aim to encourage children to cook and eat.”

The event launch took place on Monday (February 10th) when City Catering was awarded the Soil Association’s Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for serving fresh and healthy meals across 73 city schools.

The Food for Life Catering Mark aims to bring together all of the sustainability issues – health, climate change and animal welfare – and in doing so claims to provide reassurance that the food served in schools meets high standards of traceability, freshness and provenance.
