DfE opens free breakfast club programme opportunity for food providers

The free breakfast club programme is one of the Department for Education's flagship policies, central to the Government's mission to break down barriers to opportunity for every child.
Once fully implemented, it will deliver a free breakfast club in every primary school in England, giving millions of children the chance to start the day supported and ready to learn.
From April 2025, the department has funded free breakfast clubs in 750 early adopter schools across England, reaching ca.180,000 pupils of whom ca.79,000 are disadvantaged. This is part of a test and learn phase in advance of further roll out to schools with primary-aged pupils across England.
A spokesperson said: “We believe that additional benefits can be delivered from working closely with partner organisations to support schools in enhancing their free breakfast clubs delivery.
“We are seeking offers from food providers that enable participating schools to maximise the value of their food spending through deals for the schools and to ensure securing food is as easy, reliable and flexible as possible.”
The location of the contract includes: North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East and South West. All interested food providers must:
- Be available for all Participating Schools (currently ca.750 ) to access and use throughout the term of the sponsorship arrangement (15th September 2025 to 31st July 2026)
- Comply with the School Food Standards, giving Participating Schools sufficient breadth of choice to meet the recommendations for a balanced breakfast detailed in the ‘delivering a high quality food offer’ section of the breakfast clubs early adopter guidance for schools and trusts in England
- Deliver value for money for Participating Schools, offering deals that help them maximise the value of their food spend and thus enhance their offer to pupils.
