Doncaster headteacher wins School Leader Food Hero Award

05 Jul 2023
Doncaster Council, School Catering are really pleased that the head, Helena Honeybone and her chef Andy Lowe have received the Good School Food Awards, School Leader Food Hero for the work they have undertaken at Townfield Primary School in encouraging their multicultural pupils to eating more healthily, eating new foods, encouraging a social enjoyable lunch time experience and learning cookery skills.

There has been a considerable amount of work jointly between our catering team and the school to make food a focus and find ways to develop a proactive food culture and understanding of what we eat, where it comes from and how it helps us thrive.

Townfield was pleased to welcome Dame Jessica Ennis to school and with cooperation with the school business manager, school catering managers and Andy and his catering team they were able to surprise Helena with the presentation at lunchtime.

Helena said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Jamie Oliver 'school leader food hero award' at Town Field Primary. Our chef Andy Lowe from Doncaster schools catering goes the extra mile every day to ensure that lunchtimes are really special times for children and the food is delicious. We are all so very proud - such great recognition for our school, for our trust and for Doncaster.”

It is lovely to have the hard work of our frontline teams appreciated and that they can work closely with their pupils and school’s teams to make a difference. Townfield has a high number of FSM and daily meals served in excess of 250. The school is culturally diverse with upwards of 15 languages spoken.

Earlier this year Townfield supported LACA and Doncaster School Catering when ITN recorded a news feature highlighting the crisis and funding challenges our business/industry is currently experiencing.
