Eat the Rainbow campaign increases school meal uptake

Roberta Fleming, catering manager at Class Catering, increased the uptake of school meals at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School in Stratford-upon-Avon after the launch of a healthy eating campaign.

The campaign aimed to encourage primary school children to make healthier meal choices at school by offering children extra portions of fruit and vegetables.  

Eat the Rainbow persuaded children to eat more fruit and vegetables by offering them stickers and teaching them about the importance of eating their ‘five-a-day’. Children also had the opportunity to enter competitions including ‘Design a Meal’ and ‘How well do you know your Veg?’

Class Catering has saw a 5% increase in meal uptake following the campaign. Fleming created the campaign as part of her NVQ Level Four ‘mock’ exam training. 

Fleming said: “As well as providing school meals, we firmly believe that we have a responsibility to our primary school customers by supporting children’s education about food, lifestyle and making healthy choices.

“Our primary school offer ‘Food Smart’ is all about promoting a well-balanced diet whilst encouraging the children to try new things and to have fun with food. 

“The healthy eating campaign developed as part of my NVQ really got the children at Thomas Jolyffe thinking about a healthier lifestyle and making good food choices in a fun and interactive way.

“It was really well received by the school and it was so satisfying to see the children learning about food and enjoying themselves into the bargain.”
