Food Teacher wins award for school recipe book

04 Dec 2020
The Hertfordshire based Food Teacher, founded by Katherine Tate, won the ‘Best in UK’ award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the Cooking Schools/Education category.

The book was created to support Irish schools deliver cooking and nutrition within the classroom with minimal equipment and no heat.

The awards are considered the ‘Oscars’ of the book awards, with previous winners including school dinner campaigner Jamie Oliver, chef Michel Roux and Paul Hollywood.

The Food Teacher has been working with schools, teachers and families across the country for a number of years to support practical cookery sessions in schools.

Tate commented: “When I set up The Food Teacher in 2014 my primary aim was to work with schools and utilise my experience as a teacher and education consultant. To be able to impact thousands of children across the UK and overseas is incredibly satisfying.

“For my book to win the award and now represent the UK with a chance of winning Best in the World is a huge achievement. At The Food Teacher we encourage children and families to think about what they eat and to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

“The book encompasses my experience as a teacher and nutritional therapist to help solve a very real problem faced by a number of schools across the UK, who don’t have cookery spaces, access to kitchens or simple lesson ideas that will support curriculum delivery.”

The final to choose the ‘Best in the World’ takes place on 5 June 2021 at Paris Cookbook Fair, in the Louvre Tuileries Gardens.
