SNP plans to extend free school meals

03 Dec 2020
The Scottish National Party has announced it plans to expand Scotland’s free school meal provision to all primary schoolchildren, it was reported by the BBC.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney, said: “If elected next May, from 2022, we will extend universal free school lunches to all primary school pupils from P1 to P7.

“We want every child to have every chance to learn every minute of every school day. A child arriving at school hungry cannot learn as well as they should, so we will also extend free provision of healthy breakfast to all primary school pupils as well.”

If re-elected the SNP also pledged to extend free school meals during the holiday period to help combat holiday hunger. According to BBC News the SNP’s proposed scheme will cost £230m a year.
